The Semiotics of Russian Culture 3201-SKR-OG
1. Basic information - concepts of sign, semiotics, semiotic relations; different definitions of culture; the concept of semiotics of culture in the context of other related disciplines.
2. Main representatives of the Tartu-Moscow school, its assumptions and achievements.
3. An open space in Russian culture: the binary East-West opposition as an indicator of the orientation of Russian culture.
4. City as a seemingly closed space: types of cities; founding myth, urban physiogia.
5. Moscow and St. Petersburg as semiotic objects: urban text.
6. House as a closed space: landowner's text in Russian and Polish culture.
7. Social space - an individual and authority in Russian culture: sacralization of the ruler; Russian selfishness, rebellion, anarchy and nihilism; the idea of Russian statehood.
8. Social space - attitude to law and morality in Russian culture.
9. Social space - Russian and Polish intelligentsia: genesis, the concept of "unnecessary people"; the sacrifice and idea of a solemn act; logocentrism of Russian culture.
10. Time in culture: types of time; concepts of the past, present and future in different cultures; semiotics of history - the essence of Russian utopia and Russian historiosophy.
11. The category "own" - "foreign" as the basic category of culture; the role of the stereotype in cultural relations; Polish and Russian soul; linguistic features as cultural features.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student in the field of knowledge:
1) Knows in a structured way the terminology, theory and methodology in the field of semiotics of culture;
2) Knows and understands the connections between semiotics and other fields and disciplines of the humanities;
3) Knows and understands the principles of semiotic analysis of various precedent texts of culture (literature, painting, film, musical works, political and journalistic texts);
In terms of skills:
4) recognizes and properly interprets, within various cultural texts, the basic symbols and myths of Russian culture and knows how to compare them with symbols and myths of Polish culture and other cultures;
5) links phenomena of reality in the field of art, politics and economy with the zone of signs and symbols of culture;
6) binds theoretical assumptions in the field of semiotics with specific examples of cultural symbols;
in the field of social competences:
7) accept and appreciate cultural diversity;
8) understands the concepts of prejudice and cultural stereotype and is able to overcome them;
9) modifies its attitude to character reality.
Assessment criteria
40% presence control; semester work in the form of an essay, dissertation or review of a scientific paper on a topic raised in a lecture or related to it 60%
