Poland and Spain: Historical Parallelisms 3201-PiH-OG
Polish-Spanish studies, understood as a study of the relationships between Poland and Spain, have already several centuries of tradition, within the framework of which the problem of the so-called historical parallelisms between the two countries has been repeatedly addressed. The best known work devoted to historical analogies between Poland and Spain is “A Historical Parallel of Spain and Poland in the Sixteenth, Seventeenth, and Eighteenth Centuries” written by Joachim Lelewel, which contains a synthetic juxtaposition of the history of both countries from the 16th century to the first half of the 18th century inclusive. The present course discusses the issues elaborated and unelaborated so far within the field of studies of the historical parallelisms between Poland and Spain on the basis of both the existing publications concerning this subject-matter and the authorial considerations, focusing largely on the analogies within the framework of the contemporary history of both countries, particularly important for the shaping of Polish-Spanish relations and the future of these countries in the United Europe. The entire course is complemented with the authorial considerations on the historical analogies between the capitals of both countries, which focus mainly on the twentieth-century history of Warsaw and Madrid, and it finishes with a concise discussion of the ways in which the Poles are perceived by the Spaniards and in which the Spaniards are perceived by the Poles, as evidenced in fiction as well as other types of Polish and Spanish publications.
Topics of particular classes:
1) Polish-Spanish studies as a field of knowledge
2) Short history of tracing Polish-Spanish parallelisms
3) Poland and Spain: geographical distance vs. historical proximity
4) Beginnings of Polish statehood vs. beginnings of Spanish statehood
5) Polish territories during the period of feudal fragmentation vs. future Spanish territories during the period of the Christian kingdoms
6) Golden age of the Polish Crown and the Spanish Crown as Catholic powers
7) Commonwealth of Both Nations and Spanish colonial empire: European superpowers in times of greatness and decline
8) Poland and Spain under the yoke of totalitarianisms: from wars to the “communist” regime and the Francoist regime
9) Republic of Poland and Kingdom of Spain as the eastern and western flank of the European Union
10) Polish-Spanish relations in the United Europe
11) Warsaw and Madrid: historical analogies
12) Poland in the Spanish mirror vs. Spain in the Polish mirror
