Translation and Music 3201-PDM-OG
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the issues related to the translation of music-related texts, and to introduce them to the basic issues that arise at the interface between art, which music undoubtedly is a kind of code, and translation studies.
The translation of texts in the context of music involves significant challenges and constraints. The translator must take into account not only linguistic elements, but also, and perhaps above all, extra-linguistic factors arising from the characteristics of musical works. The universal language of music is often in dialogue with the text, and this can be very diverse.
Topics of the course will include both the translation of texts from music history or theory, opera librettos and melic texts {literary-musical works (operetta, musical, song)}.
