Mems of Translation Studies 3201-MPK-OG

The course provides an overview of the history of translation and the present condition of the translator’s profession; the diverse aspects of translation as a process; linguistic and intercultural translation theories; the main types of translation (written, oral, machine); principles for translation assessment (translation as product); and the ethical dimension of translation. The detailed syllabus covers the following topics: the history of translation and the development of translation studies through the “memes” of translation theory; literalness and freedom in translation (a historical outline); linguistic and cultural translatability and untranslatability; types of translation from the perspective of the source text; types of translation equivalence (Nida, Newmark, House, Koller, Komissarov, Kade); adequacy, acceptability, and loyalty in translation; translator competences and roles; translation strategies and techniques (Vinay and Darbelnet, Newmark, Hejwowski).
Student workload:
• 30 h – participation in classes
• 15 h – reading of assigned literature
• 15 h – preparation of the final paper
Teaching methods:
Lecture with elements of discussion.
If in-person classes are not possible, the course will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Meet or other platforms recommended by the University of Warsaw.

Prerequisites (description)

The aim of the lecture is to present the history of translation and the current state of the translator’s profession, the various aspects of translation understood as a process, linguistic and intercultural theories of translation, as well as the ethical dimension of translation. The discussion is based on quotations from the works of major international translation theorists.

KNOWLEDGE – the student knows and understands:
1. Key concepts and terminology in translation studies;
2. Fundamental issues of translation as a social, interlingual and intercultural phenomenon;
3. Historical and contemporary trends, issues, and research methodologies in translation studies, and is aware of the major research centres in Europe and worldwide;
4. The translator’s professional environment, competencies, and roles.
SKILLS – the student is able to:
1. Apply the acquired knowledge to conduct research in the field of translation studies using appropriate methodologies;
2. Search for, analyse, evaluate, and select information in the field of translation studies in both the native and foreign languages at an advanced level, making use of the latest information and communication technologies;
3. Formulate and express personal opinions and ideas, using argumentation based on the views of other authors, and independently draw conclusions in oral and written form;
4. Independently acquire knowledge in the theory, practice, and criticism of translation, and assess the usefulness of methods, practices, and procedures in their own professional activity.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES – the student is ready to:
1. Recognise the importance of knowledge – including translational knowledge – in solving translation-related problems;
2. Critically evaluate research in the field of translation studies, especially that published in academic journals, monographs, and popular science sources.
