Proposed topics of classes (thematic blocks will be broken up and
shaped ad hoc under the influence of current events) :
0. "Musical life" - scope of the concept, preliminary recognition of
issues, preferences and activities of participants.
1. Musical life in the past and today (comparison): historical
sources - iconographic and memoirs.
2. Musical institutions in Poland - characteristics of activities,
review of important events.
3. Warsaw music institutions - detailed analysis of activities,
possible selection for participation;
Concert halls as an acoustic and social space.
4. Music festivals in Poland and their European contexts;
Warsaw festivals - detailed characteristics of types and
programs;
Sociological phenomenon of festivals (festivals versus everyday
concert life).
5. Writings about music - Musical and other publishing houses,
publishing music and texts about music;
Musical and cultural magazines - types and forms of
publishing.
6. Other media spaces - radio, music portals, social media.
7. Phonography - publishing houses, websites, important
recordings.
8. Non-musical institutions, incidentally involved in musical
narratives - a review of events and publications;
9. Musicologist in the cinema.
10. Musicologist in the theatre.
11. Musicologist in museums.
12. Contemporary music criticism
In addition, meetings with musicologists working in various music
and cultural institutions are planned.

Assessment criteria
credit based on activity during classes, confirmed by an oral report of
participation in 5 selected events during the semester and a short
recommendation of 5 other cultural texts. 1 absence is allowed
regardless of the reason. Extra absences will require credit in writing.
Bibliography
Systematic review of the music press, websites of cultural institutions,
social media, selected publications and materials related to specific
events.
One historical memoir source from the past regarding musical life to
choose from, e.g. Nowe Życie by Roman Jasiński
A comparative review of the old (at least pre-war) press (i.e. Echo
Muzyczne i teatralne, Gazetka Muzyczna) - interesting facts etc. (internet
sources)
