Between early and modern Polish music 3106-MSW-OG

The leitmotif of the course will be the work of outstanding Polish artists, performers and composers who, during the partitions, operated in various European countries and promoted Polish art. The genres and ideological threads characteristic of Polish music, taken from Polish literature, philosophy, and social life, and representing the national topos, play an important role in their output. The works of Józef Kozłowski, Antoni and Apolinary Kątski, Henryk and Józef Wieniawski, Wiktor Każyński, Teodor Leszetycki, Emil Młynarski, Henryk Pachulski, Feliks Blumenfeld, Witold Maliszewski and others will be discussed and presented. These issues will be presented against the background of a broader panorama of musical creativity in the Romantic era.

Learning outcomes

Classes carried out in the form of a seminar are not only to familiarize students with important phenomena of Polish musical culture of the nineteenth century, but also to encourage them to undertake future research on filling the still numerous blank spots in its history and animating undertakings aimed at its popularization.

Assessment criteria

- presence;
- active participation in the classes, including preparation of a short paper based on the indicated literature on the subject;
- final test.
In the case of a greater number of absences, an additional paper is required (minimum 4 standard pages, footnotes and bibliography).
