Literature and music 3106-LiM-OG
The class has been designed as an introductory course to word and music studies. The starting point will be the discussion of semantics of language as opposed to the non-semantic quality of music as this opposition is the foundation of basic concepts in both literary and music studies. Moreover the fundamental issues of orality/literacy studies will be presented (e.g. the theory of Walter Jackson Ong). Following that, a number of literary and musical theories will be discussed, including Andrzej Hejmej’s three types of musicality of literature. Finally, the class will examine selected prose works, with special focus on Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann and Opowiadania muzyczne by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz.
