From Prus to Proust 3001-PDP-OG
The aim of the lecture is to acquaint students with the most important phenomena in the mid-nineteenth and 20th century prose. Boleslaw Prus's prose works is treated as a kind of guidebook for this area, set by the names such as, Dickens, Balzak, Zola, Berent, Żeromski, Irzykowski, James, Woolf and Joyce. The course is to show the transformation of technique and philosophy of writing novels as well as to acquaint students with the languages of prose of that time such as: realism, naturalism, impressionism, expressionism, grotesque. An important path in the reflection is the problem of realism and the transformations of the formula of "reality" which is linked to the phenomenon of the crisis of representation. The lecture complements the classes about the history of Polish literature during positivism and “Young Poland” period. Students of departments treat this course as a complementation to general knowledge related to literature.
