From Bolesław Prus to Marcel Proust. The novel of the second half of the nineteenth century 3001-OPD-OG
The lecture is devoted to transformation of novel in the second half of the 19th century.
1. Drawing the map: the nineteenth century - the century of the novel; novelists and explore the world; the situation of the perception andscientific paradigms; the big subjects of nineteenth century novels (love, identity, modernity, town, consciousness and unconsciousness); great literature and popular culture.
2. Bolesław Prus and his masters: Charles Dickens, Honore de Balzac, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski - main directions and inspirations; Prus and the discovery of every day life - short stories and the novel.
3. Prus at the school of Emile Zola: the theory of "experimental novel"; Les Rougon-Macquart - patterns of this cycle; Zola and conception of la bete humaine; adventures of the narrative; the tragic naturalism; Zola and his pupils (the case of J. Huysmans); Prus and Zola.
4. Prus at the school of Gustav Flaubert: Flaubert's "psychological naturalism"; Flaubert looking for a modern desire; adventures of the narrator; the problem of the composition; Słówko o krytyce pozytywnej of Prus as a manifesto of realism; Prus and artists of magazine "Wędrowiec".
5. Great Russians: embarrassing authority - Fiodor Dostoyevsky; Dostoevsky and the modern desire; Lew Tolstoy's vision of development and the novel; "ordinary people" of Prus and Chekhov.
6. Prus and the conception of realism: the development of the theory and practice of the novel; in the circle of Hipolit Taine; Prus and Thomas Carlyle's philosophy; Prus and Stifter - category odf every day life;, Notatki o kompozycji; two perspectives - "microscope" and "telescope"; the discovery of mystic realism.
7. Heroes of Prus in search of the identity: the desires and illusions; a man on the communications market; the search for God; men and women; Prus and Catholic modernism; incomplete novels.
8. The novel of "Young Poland": the main trends; philosophical inspirations; problem of "experience" in Henri Bergson's philosophy and the novel; intermediate forms.
9. From naturalism to psychologism: Stefan Żeromski and Władysław Reymont; syncretism in the novel; lyric and drama in the novel; Żeromski and Reymont in search of the modernity; Stanisław Przybyszewski as a novelist.
10. Joseph Conrad and Polish novelists - possibilities of meeting: Conrad and the generation of Polish positivists; Eliza Orzeszkowa on Conrad; responsibilities of contemporary writer; the disease of the modernity.
11. World of Wacław Berent's novels: Friedrich Nietzsche and Berent as a translator and novelist; Berent's characters and the mechanism of desire; new form of narrative; Berent's fight for style.
12. Female novels: from Eliza Orzeszkowa to Gabriela Zapolska; Zofia Nałkowska and individualism of Nietzsche; Maria Komornicka on the novel; Jehanne Wielopolska - unknown modernist novelist.
13. Modernist experiments: "strange novel" of "Young Poland" generation; Paluba of Karol Irzykowski; Nietota of Tadeusz Micinski; the hypertext before the internet era; from Prus to Irzykowski.
14. Modernist revolution - James Joyce and Virginia Wolf: Dujardin's inspiration; Joyce's method - the adventure of perception and narrative; Woolf and "stream of reality", "splash effect".
15. Worlds of Marcel Proust: literary inspirations; the principle of "lost time"; novel and memory; on the trail of the unconscious; from Prus to Proust - the way of interpretation
