Term 2023L:

Block I: Selected theoretical concepts in psychophysiology
The goals and tasks of psychophysiology as well as important theoretical concepts that have guided psychophysiological research will be discussed: activation theory, autonomic space, biofeedback, etc .. The typical research paradigms and popular methodological approaches in psychophysiology will also be presented.
Block II: Groups of psychophysiological indicators
The following lectures will discuss particular groups of psychophysiological indicators: 1) brain activity (EEG) - wave indicators and evoked potentials; 2) muscle activity (EMG) - motor activity, facial expressions; 3) cardiovascular activity (ECG, arterial pressure) - tonic and phasic changes, location in the heart cycle, HRV; 4) respiratory activity - rate and amplitude; 5) eye activity - oculography, eye-tracking; 5) skin activity (EDA) - spontaneous and evoked reactions. In terms of each group of indicators we will discuss the physiological and physical foundations of measurement and analysis, importance for various areas of psychology (affective states, cognitive activity, learning, individual differences, etc.), the most important discoveries, concepts and theories, research paradigms and methodological.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, student:
- knows the essential methods of measurement and determining indicators in psychophysiology (K_W02);
- knows the most important research paradigms in psychophysiology (K_W02);
- can describe a typical interpretations of psychophysiological indicators in the field of psychology (K_W04);
- can identify in publications data on the importance of psychophysiological indicators and assess the correctness of described measurement and analysis procedures (K_U05);
- is aware of the importance of psychophysiological research in psychology and understands the need to include them in the structure of theory (K_K04).
