Taboo in art 2300-TSz-OG
n the history of art, there were a lot of events, which then were evaluated as outrageous, shocking and disturbing. The same works later turned out to be so crucial that they led to a change in thinking about art, the artist and the recipient.
During the course we will talk about breaking social taboos in art, the role of scandal in the arts, we will consider the notion of artistic provocation. We will examine works of coming from before the 20th century and try to answer the question: why something that for us is the norm, shocked the art audience in the past(Caravaggio, Gericault, Delacroix, Manet)
We will also select works of contemporary art, which cause widespread debate on scandal in art, taboo in art, boundaries of art, art of tolerance (Kozyra, Libera, Orlan, Serrano, Cattelan)
During the course we will analyze examples of profanation of the sacred in art, ugliness, death and disease in art, banality and everyday life, intimacy and physiology, sex and sexuality.
We will talk about biographies of artists, their scandalous behaviors and speeches, of leading scandalous artists.
We will analyze the attacks on contemporary art in Poland, attempts to censor art, the consequences of crossing taboos, etc.
