1. The America as a region. Introduction to the problem.
Nomenclature: America, Latin America, Hispanoamerica, Lusoamerica, Anglo-America, etc. The determinants od distinguishing the region in international relations.
2-3. International relations in Latin America until World War II. The inter-American system
Colonial period. Wars of Independence. Great power rivalry. The Pan-American movement. Conference in Chapultepec. The emergence of the inter-American system. The Rio Pact.
4. Mexico's foreign policy
Specifics and main actors of Mexican foreign policy. Principles and doctrines that govern Mexico's external relations. The evolution of foreign policy after 1945. Relations with the USA
5. Foreign policy of Central American countries (to choose from: Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama)
Main determinants of the foreign policy of the Central American countries. Central American integration. Central American integration. The evolution of foreign policy after 1945. Central American conflicts. Main problems in external relations (drugs, migration, organized crime). The specifics of the foreign policy of the selected country.
6. Cuba's foreign policy
The importance of Cuba in the Western Hemisphere. The influence of the Cuban Revolution on international relations in the Americas. Bay of Pigs invasion. Missile crisis. Cuban-American relations. Foreign policy in the twenty-first century The main problems and directions of engagement.
7. Foreign policy of the selected Caribbean countries on the example of Haiti/Dominican Republic
Conditions, priorities and main directions of foreign policy of the Caribbean countries. From colonization to dictatorship - the evolution of the foreign policy of selected states in historical terms. The role and importance of regional integration in the Caribbean. The most important political and economic challenges of the Caribbean states.
8. Venezuela's foreign policy
From puntofijismo to the socialism of the twenty-first century – the evolution of the main assumptions of Venezuelan foreign policy. Venezuela's vision of regional integration. The genesis and consequences of the political and economic crisis. The International Position of Venice
9. Colombia's foreign policy
The main directions and challenges of Colombian foreign policy. The impact of the Colombian Civil War on international relations in the region. The peace process. Colombian-American relations
10. Brazil's foreign policy
The evolution of the priorities and main directions of Brazil's international engagement in historical terms. Foreign policy during the Cold War. Brazilian "Pink Wave". Brazil's role in regional integration. Relations with the USA
11. Argentina's foreign policy
Specificity and determinants of Argentina's foreign policy. Argentina's international involvement during the dictatorship. The main challenges and problems of foreign policy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries Relations with the USA and international financial institutions. Argentina and regional integration
12. Chile's foreign policy
The evolution of Chile's foreign policy from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century – the main assumptions and directions. Chile's role in the western hemisphere during the Cold War. Contemporary challenges of Chilean foreign policy.
13. The Andean states (Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru)
The main determinants and peculiarities of the foreign policy of the Andean states. The role and importance of regional integration. Contemporary problems and challenges of foreign policy of Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru (to choose from), e.g. the cocaleros movement; the question of Bolivia's access to the Pacific.
14. Foreign policy of Paraguay and Uruguay
Internal and external conditions of the foreign policies of Paraguay and Uruguay. Complicated relations with Argentina and Brazil. The importance of regional integration in the foreign policy of states.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
Student knows the main trends and specifics of the foreign policy of Latin American countries; correctly identifies the roles of non-regional actors and the importance of the activity of Latin American countries on a global level; has a thorough knowledge of the process of formulating foreign policies and their social and economic conditions;
Abilities:
Student is able to analyse the internal and external conditions of foreign policies of the countries of the region; has the ability to interpret the international activities of Latin American countries in a broader regional and global context;
Competence:
Possesses critical thinking ability that can be used in professional activities; is able to appropriately define priorities for the implementation of various academic tasks; is able to critically analyze and independently expand knowledge of the subject; can synthesize knowledge from various sources and formulate correct arguments
Assessment criteria
The course ends with a credit.
Basic requirements are:
1. Class attendance.
2. Students’ activity 30%
3. Written exam – 70%.
