Spatial data analysis in the R computing environment 1900-ADPSR(KC)-OG
The goal of the course is to provide students with sufficient level of skills in the R programming environment to process spatial data and create simple functions and scripts, as well as use publicly available scripts and data visualization tools. The following topics will be covered during the course:
- the structure of the R environment and basic commands,
- methods for storing spatial data in R,
- statistical analysis of non-spatial data in R,
- spatial analyses in R in the field of physical and socioeconomic geography,
- methods for presenting results in the form of graphs and maps,
- examples of R applications in physical geography analyses (e.g., DEM analysis, landscape structure analysis, satellite image classification).
The course consists of 30 hours of R exercises.
Student workload:
- classroom work - 30 hours,
- preparation of a final project - 20 hours.
The exercises are conducted in the form of computer-based exercises.

Assessment criteria
Grading will be based on a final project on a selected topic, completed individually in the R environment. The project will be submitted in the form of code, output data, and a commentary on the results.
Additionally, the course will include a pre- and post-test to assess participants' progress in two areas: R programming and spatial analysis knowledge.
