Medicinal herbs 1400-121ZL-OG
The schedule of classes includes 15 meetings (90 minutes / meeting) in the form of lectures, during which selected species of medicinal herbs used in the treatment of common health disorders and/or diseases will be presented. Some results of in vitro and in vivo tests on the therapeutic effects of selected active compounds on specific health issue and the occurring cellular responses (systemic, lymphatic system, cytokine cascades), formulation of the preparation and a dosage will be discussed in detail. Examples of medicinal herbs applications over the centuries in various cultures and in the current practice will be given.
Lecture topics:
1. Traditions of herbal medicine in Polish folk medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and African tribes.
2. Division of herbal plants and the habitat of medicinal herbs cultivation in Poland and in other parts of the world.
3. Acquisition and harvesting of herbal raw materials. The importance of drying methods and storage conditions.
4. Different types of herbal preparations and methods of their preparation.
5. Medicinal herbs and their raw materials used to strengthen the immune system.
6. Medicinal herbs and their secondary metabolites used in the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases.
7. Herbs that strengthen the proper functioning of the nervous system.
8. Herbs used in the treatment of digestive system diseases.
9. Medicinal plants used in cardiovascular diseases.
10. Plants used in the treatment of diseases of the genito-urinary system.
11. Medicinal herbs used in skin diseases.
12. Medicinal-chemical drug interactions.
13. Concentration of different secondary metabolites in selected medicinal herb species – the importance of dosage depending on the age.
14. Contemporary herbal practice in industrialized countries.
15. Polish and foreign business activity in the field of medicinal herbs.

Learning outcomes in the terms of knowledge_W:
- understands the basic phenomena and biological processes of plant development (K_W01),
- has knowledge of the most important problems in the field of various branches of biology and related other natural, medical and economic disciplines (K_W04)
- has knowledge of basic concepts and biological terminology and has knowledge of the development of plant and human biology and the research methods used in the biology research field (K_W05)
- knows the basic principles of health and safety procedures during the production process of various medicinal herbs preparations (K_W09).
Learning outcomes in terms of skills_U:
- understands the literature on plant biology in English, reads with understanding simple scientific texts in English (K_U02),
- uses scientific and popular science biological texts in Polish and English and communicates in English at the B2+ level (K_U03),
- analyzes the market in terms of available herbal medicinal products (K_U06), - has the ability to prepare and deliver oral presentations in Polish and English at the B2+ level (K_U11).

Assessment criteria
Assessment methods and assessment criteria:
The condition for the admission to the exam is the attendance at minimum 85% of lectures. Written exam in the form of an examination sheet with open and test questions. The pass criterion is to show that the knowledge presented in the lectures has been assimilated.
