Field geology of the Tatras-Podhale-Pieniny area 1300-WGTPP-B-OG
The course is focused on showing and explaining, based on some field examples, differences and similarities in geological history and structures of the Tatras, Pieniny Klippen Belt and Podhale Basin. The lithology, stratigraphy and the units identity are discussed at each of the trip stops. The practical aspect of the course lies in:
- field identification of rocks, their texture and composition,
- field identification and interpretation of tectonic phenomena,
- reading and understanding geological maps and cross-sections,
- measuring of structures and rock orientation,
- making a record of field observations,
- identification of structural units from the distance,
- identification of structural units based on rock succession,
- encoding deformation history in tectonic features observed in rock outcrops
Rules and regulations:
Travel and accomodation expenses of participants are on their own cost and are not reimbursable. Course instructors do not provide transportation of participants during the course. Reasonably priced collective guesthouse accommodation will be arranged in/at Zakopane and at Szczawnica. Course participants need to be in good physical condition and be able to join daylong mountain hikes. No challenging trails or hikes in demanding off-trail terrain are planned. Outdoor clothing (including raincoat jacket) and walking boots is the essential equipment. The trips schedule can be modified according to the weather situation and forecast. Participants are urged to take laptops and cameras (preferably lens cameras) to the course.

Learning outcomes
Class participants:
- have extensive knowledge on the geological history and structure of the studied area,
- know relationship between the landform and rock properties, tectonic features and deformation history,
- know the steps in evolution from sedimentary basin to tectonic unit
- understand the concept of nappe and thrusting mechanisms
- know the impact of glaciers on landforms in the Tatras
- can identify the Tatras, Pieniny Klippen Belt and Podhale Basin on the cross-sections through the Carpathians
- knows the past ideas on the origin of the Tatras and Pieniny range
Class participants get also some skills typical of geological field studies:
- identification of common rocks,
- interpretation of typical sedimentary conditions based on rock characteristics,
- identification and genetic interpretation of tectonic features,
- reading and understanding geological maps
Assessment criteria
Course participants must attend the full course.
Based on record of field observations, participants prepare (in groups of 3 people) written and illustrated field reports. There are 3 reports made by each group, the collective work on a report is led by one participant (each time the other).
Average of grades for field trip reports is calculated (weight of a grade for the leader of a report is x2).
