Synthesis and Characterisation of Compounds of Pharmacological Importance A 1200-1CHMSZFAL6
Students will work individually. On the basis of literature provided by the teacher, the student will prepare a work plan and carry out a few-step synthesis of a compound of pharmacological importance. Obtained products will be analyzed, among others, by thin layer chromatography and purified by standard laboratory techniques. The structure of the final product will be confirmed by available analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The final stage will be to develop the characteristics of the obtained compound, including information on its activity, principle of action, applications, based on independently found sources.
Estimated student workload per semester – 50 hours, including:
- participation in classes: 30 hours
- preparation for the preliminary test: 5 hours
- preparation of the report: 10 hours.

KNOWLEDGE: Upon completion of the course, the student:

• has advanced knowledge of the methods and techniques of synthesis and identification of organic compounds (with particular emphasis on pharmacologically relevant and biologically active compounds) using chemical, chromatographic, spectroscopic, and diffraction techniques;
• has advanced knowledge of the structure, activity, and synthesis of drugs and understands the interdisciplinary nature of designing new drugs and drug delivery systems; has knowledge of the basics of molecular modeling;
• has advanced knowledge of the structure and operation of modern measuring instruments supporting scientific research in chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology;
• has advanced knowledge of the principles of occupational health and safety sufficient for work in chemical, biochemical, and molecular biology laboratories.
SKILLS: Upon completion of the course, the student:

• is able to perform the synthesis of selected organic compounds, separate mixtures of selected organic compounds, and purify the obtained components;
• is able to identify selected organic and bio-organic compounds using chemical, biochemical, molecular biology, chromatographic, and spectroscopic techniques;
• is capable of planning and conducting basic research, experiments, observations, and computer simulations in the field of chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology, as well as critically assessing their own results and discussing measurement errors;
• is able to design, assemble, and operate selected measuring equipment, perform measurements of selected physicochemical parameters, determine their values, and assess the reliability of the obtained results;
In particular:
understands the importance of careful experiment planning, observation, and monitoring of its progress, as well as maintaining detailed laboratory notes;
is able to plan laboratory work efficiently and adjust the number of tasks to the available working time;
is able to carry out the synthesis of a selected organic compound and isolate and purify the obtained products;
is able to identify selected organic and bio-organic compounds using appropriate chemical, chromatographic, and spectroscopic techniques;
is able to independently acquire knowledge and prepare a compound characterization report using various sources (written and electronic), including those in a foreign language;
is aware of the hazards present in an organic chemistry laboratory and works in compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
Assessment criteria
The final grade consists of partial grades on:
- a preliminary test for an assigned preparation;
- synthesis of an organic compound and laboratory notes;
- the characterization of the obtained compound of pharmacological significance on the basis of independently found information;.
Attendance is compulsory. Students are allowed up to two excused absences, which must be made up at a later date.
