The following topics will be discussed:
1. Slavery in Spanish and Portuguese America - basic features, similarities and differences;
2. Factors that differentiate the situation of people of African descent in Latin American countries, regions and places after independence
3. Post-colonial perspective and the situation of people of African descent in the Latin American countries in the 21st century; Latin American organizations
4. Overview of contemporary situations in selected countries, according to students' regional interests.
4.1. Mexico – Afro Mestizos, Afro Mexicans or Black Mexicans? Costa Chica and Veracruz
4.2. Peru - Who can claim to be a 'real Afroperuvian'? Lima and Chincha versus Zana
4.3. Bolivia - Afrobolivians or Afro Aymaras?
4.4. Ecuador - San Lorenzo and Esmeraldas versus Valle del Chota
4.5. Colombia - Afrocolumbians in the Constitution; Caribbean coast, Pacific coast, Chocó, Afrocolumbians in cities - Cali and Bogota; the case San Basilio del Palenque

KNOWLEDGE: the student
- has knowledge about the nature of contemporary Afro-Latin American communities and their past
knows the basic terminology used to analyze socio-geographical phenomena in the field of research on Afro-Latin American communities - - has knowledge about the interdependence between people and their natural environment and the social, economic and political system they created;
- has the ability to identify the main cultural regions inhabited by African-American societies and describe the distinguishing features of each of them and the people who created them
- has the ability to recognize the meaning, analysis and critical interpretation of spatial conditions and consequences of social processes taking place in the Americas -
SOCIAL COMPETENCE:
- is open to various phenomena and ideas, values diversity and diversity of opinions and cultures, respects cultural diversity
- is aware of the importance of American culture and patterns for shaping its own cultural identity
