Social problems of indigenous peoples in Latin America 4206-FS144-OG
During the course, we will discuss various phenomena which constitute significant social problems currently occurring in indigenous societies in the region. One of the main issues analyzed in the course of the seminar will be violence and its various aspects (including physical, cultural, structural violence). Other themes discussed and analyzed in conjunction to the main topic are the concepts of development, law and right, the structures of power, the problems connected with discrimination, exclusion and racism. Selected social and cultural phenomena will be analyzed in conjunction with the economic and political phenomena and in the context of events connected to the history of a given society or community.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will have acquired knowledge of the current social problems of indigenous societies in Latin America, their origins and mutual relations. They will know the different sociological and anthropological concepts, explaining the occurrence of selected social problems. They will be able to analyze these issues in the context of other phenomena and processes from the local, regional and global perspectives. Students will have an in-depth knowledge of the relationship of cultural studies and American studies with sociology, anthropology and other social sciences, enabling them the use of an interdisciplinary approach in the conducted research. Students have a great ability to prepare oral presentations in Spanish.

presentation 30%, tests on set reading material 60 %, active participation 10%, attendance to classes (max 3 absences)
