Current issues in Latin America 4206-BP-AL
The students are divided into 4 groups. Each group follows different mass medium available on the Internet. Every week each group chooses the news of the week and publishes a link in an online document in order to share it with other groups. During the classes the students hold a discussion on the selected news, presenting their points of view and those of the different media.
The student are to follow the news on various topics related to Latin America, such as: politics, economy, society, culture, technology, sports, etc .
During the last classes each group prepares a final presentation with the summary of the news that appeared in their source of information during the course. The objective is to identify countries and issues that attract most public attention, as well as to analyse the image of the region presented by different media.

KNOWLEDGE
After completing the course, the students:
- have in-depth knowledge of the issues of the moment in Latin America
- are familiar with different mass media and understand their editorial lines
SKILLS
After completing the course, the students:
- can search, select, analyse and evaluate the news on Latin America
- are able to form their own opinions on the current issues in Latin America and present them in public during discussion
- can critically receive media coverage
- is able to express their opinion and participate in discussion on Latin America in Spanish
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
After completing the course, the students:
- understand the need of continuous learning and the importance of staying informed by following the news on Latin America
- can cooperate and work in groups accepting different roles
- can present their work in public and formulate arguments in discussion
Assessment criteria
The final evaluation will take into account the weekly selection of the news, the students' active participation in discussions and the final presentation with the following weight:
news selection – 30%
active participation – 30%
final presentation - 40%
Only one unjustified absence is allowed. If more, the student will not be able to approve the course.
