International Disputes and Conflicts in Europe 4003-CE-SIKE-OG
Classes in mixed form - lecture and seminar
The course will focus on theoretical and empirical problems connected with international disputes and conflicts. The theoretical part will present possibilities of peaceful solution (diplomatic and legal) of dispute and conflict. Within the empirical part the most important international disputes and conflicts in Europe will be analyzed.

I. The definitions of dispute and conflict in international relations
II. Peaceful ways of resolving disputes in international relations
III. Problems and conflicts related to the accession of Turkey to the European Union
- The Cyprus Problem
- Greek-Turkish conflict in the Aegean Sea
- Kurdish Problem
IV. Problems and conflicts related to the collapse of the USSR and the eastern policy of the EU
- Russian-Ukrainian conflict
- Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict
- The problem of Moldovan
- Russian-Georgian conflict
V. Disputes and problems of Balkan
- The problem of Kosovo's independence
- Albanian issue in Macedonia
- Greek-Macedonian dispute
VI. Ethnic and territorial problems in Spain
- The problem of Basque
- British-Spanish dispute over Gibraltar
VII. The conflict in Northern Ireland.
VIII. The problem in the Middle East - the involvement of European countries.

Learning outcomes
Students have knowledge of the major international conflicts and disputes in the world. They know and understand their origins, course and consequences. They can locate the disputes and conflicts on the map, pointing to the disputed territories. Thanks to above information they are capable to provide scenarios of possible solutions to these conflicts.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
Within the sphere of knowledge:
• have an in-depth understanding of the theory of international conflicts and disputes;
• know about the methods of resolving of international conflicts and disputes;
• understand the processes of integration and their influences on the pacification of a conflict situation
• be able to use their knowledge in the discussion,
• be able to argue,
• be able to integrate knowledge from different disciplines,
• be able to critically relate to specific problems
Within the sphere of skills:
• Explain the reasons of international conflicts and disputes in contemporary world;
• Define the methods of resolving of international conflicts and disputes;
Within the sphere of social competence:
• formulate their own opinions on international conflicts and disputes;
• criticize political events relating to international conflicts and disputes within Europe;
• be aware of the need for peaceful ways to resolve disputes and conflicts
Assessment criteria
The condition of fulfilling subject is: attendene and activity at the lectures and passing writing exam.
