Economic migration and Integration Policies towards Immigrants in EU Member States 4003-203MEPI
The main objective of the classes is to discuss the most important issues related to the process of spatial mobility; trends, patterns and mechanisms of migration, contexts of migration processes (racism, colonialism) models of migration policies etc. Participation in the classes will provide students with an elementary knowledge of Europe's demographic problems, migration processes in the modern world and the effects of migration issues in perspective: social capital, the processes of integration and assimilation and its impact on the security of citizens. Among the discussed issues are issues such as: human resources of the modern world, the globalization of migration in the modern world - its causes, scale and main directions, asylum and migration policy of European countries, the policy of multiculturalism - its types of policies and their effects (based on the following selected countries: The United Kingdom, France, Germany, The Netherlands and Poland among others), the EU's employment policy and social security system, the impact of the economic crisis on labour markets and migration flows.
The key problems related to economic migrations and their significance for the EU’s labour markets will be divided into thematic blocs:
Europe’s demographic problems (3 hours)
Free movement of people – legal basis, practice (2 hours)
EU migration policy (3 hours)
Migrants in the European labour market (2 hours)
The problem of unemployment in the EU (2 hours)
The labour market in the EU – selected countries (10 hours)

Educational outcomes:
In terms of KNOWLEDGE the student:
1. will have gained knowledge about the demographic situation in Europe;
2. will have developed a theoretical knowledge of specific recent migration flows into and around the EU;
3. will have gained a practical knowledge related to the formulation of policies: immigration and emigration, identity processes and programs of adaptation and integration of immigrants in a host country;
4. will know and understand the fundamental concepts related to the European labour market, such as employment policies, labour market policies, migrant workers, social security systems,
5. will be able to understand the decision-making processes undertaken by EU institutions and bodies of the Member States in relation to national labour markets,
6. will have gained a knowledge about migrants on European labour markets, taking into account cultural differences and problems of adaptation;
In terms of ABILITIES the student will be able to:
1. interpret the phenomenon of migration against the background of rapid change in the world and use this knowledge to test hypotheses;
2. analyse the results of international research on migration and adapt them to a Polish context;
3. present the issue of migration on the basis of materials the student has found on migration in a variety of databases and institutional research;
4. perform an independent analysis of the documents relating to activities undertaken on the labour market,
5. lead a discussion on the reading and use discussion-based examples of good and bad practices of Member States' employment policies.
6. present the positions of individual Member States on migration policy and action on labour markets;
In terms of PERSONAL AND SOCIAL COMPETENCES the student will have the competence to:
1. formulate a balanced opinion on migratory phenomena through the selection of reliable sources;
2. formulate conclusions about the meaning of contemporary immigration in the formation of multicultural societies;
3. apply theoretical knowledge in the analysis of basic phenomena in the field of international economic and political relations
4. shape in themselves and their environment tolerant attitudes towards otherness, multiculturalism and acceptance
Assessment criteria
oral examination: It is required to obtain a minimum of 60%
