Anthropology of Urban Space in the Balkans 3700-KON220-AL-OG
The aim of the classes is to present the issue of cultural research on the city using the category of the divided city, as well as to familiarize students with the bases of the methodology of field research.
The city, as a place of the intensification of socio-cultural phenomena, has for a long time been of interest to many fields of science. However, it is anthropology which focuses on the dynamics of the life of urban centres and their inhabitants, not adhering to one perspective and not being constrained to one particular methodological framework.
The subject of discussion will be mostly the cities located in the Balkan region which have been formed in various contexts, and which differ in terms of social, ethnic, confessional and economic structure as well as in their function and place in the socio-political system. Historical context of the dynamics of urban space development will be particularly emphasized.
Examples will apply to the Albanian, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian context allowing students to expand their knowledge of the region beyond their main area of study.
Students will get acquainted with the specificity of local sense of urbanity through selected cultural categories that remain a reference point in contemporary research on urban space.
Selected meetings will be devoted to introducing qualitative field research. During the course, students will have the opportunity to play the roles of individuals involved in the research process, including the most important role of the researcher himself.
Type of course
Prerequisites (description)
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will have basic skills in using interdisciplinary research methods and tools in urban space analysis, will demonstrate knowledge of selected cities of the region, will be able to indicate main trends in research on urban space, will understand importance of urban studies in identifying and explaining contemporary phenomena and problems, will be able to present on issues covered in the course, will participate in discussion and will appreciate the importance of team work, field trials and contact with local people in cultural research.
Assessment criteria
The basis for the assessment of the students’ work will be activities completed during classes and the proper description of a selected research problem (in the form of a research project or essay).
