"Half of the glass is empty". Pessimism in the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche and Emil Cioran. 3700-KON163-AL
In the first semester we deal with reading (in the manner of “close reading”, sentence by sentence) of Schopenhauer’s most important book “The World as Will and Representation”.
Vol. first: Theory of perception (the world as a concept, I)
Vol. second: Theory of will (the world as will, I)
Vol. third: Theory of art (the world as a concept, II)
Vol. fourth: ethics (the world as will, II)
In the second semester I am going to analyze three of Nietzsche’s books: his early reflection (= confrontation with Schopenhauer as an educator), The Birth of Tragedy (Nietzsche’s confrontation with Schopenhauer’s aesthetic theory) and Gay Science (pessimism vs. affirmation of reality); and the selected Emil Cioran’s books from which we will certainly read two: Saints and Tears, The Temptation of Existence.
