The 'Word of Buddha': Buddhist canon, its origin and development. Selected topics. 3600-SBKB-OG
Buddha (5th c. B.C.) did not leave behind any written testimony of his teachings. His sermons, homilies, instructions were carefully memorized by his disciples and transmitted orally throughout many genererations. It was only after the demise of the Master that the disciples arranged orally the texts of the teachings, and the texts were put into writing only several hundred years later. The corpus of these texts was called Tripitaka, lit. „Three Baskets”. The Buddhist canon is regarded as a genre of anonymous literature. The Buddhist literature is very extensive both in terms of its linguistic diversity and historical and literary form. It extends in time (from the ca. 3rd c. B.C.) and space (India, South-East Asia, Central Asia, Far East).
