Buddhism and yoga 3600-PSB-BJ-OG
Yoga is one of the most characteristic elements of Indian spirituality with very old roots. Yoga is a complex system of ascetic practices and meditation techniques, which took various forms and was taken over by various religious and philosophical currents of India. From the beginning, Buddhism included yoga in its doctrinal system as a way to mystically accomplish the ultimate goal of freeing oneself from suffering. The Buddha himself achieved "the highest, perfect awakening" by devoting himself to deep meditation. Ascetic yoga practices and meditation techniques became the basis of Buddhist spirituality. During the lecture we will follow the subsequent stages of yoga development and its adaptations in various currents of Buddhism. The lecture will be supplemented with selected fragments of original texts and illustrative material.
