Chinese Art 3600-3-SI2-WSCH2
The subject is divided into two parts, equivalent to two semesters of courses: ‘Chinese Decorative Arts and Architecture’, and ‘Chinese Painting and Calligraphy’. In the first part, lectures will include the following: introduction to Chinese art history, prehistoric art, ancient art (including bronzes, jade sculpture, lacquerware), funerary art of imperial China (especially that of the Han and Tang), history of ceramics and porcelain, history of handcraft (in other media), religious art (especially monumental Buddhist sculpture), architecture (including history of parks and gardens) and folk art. The second part will be devoted to the following aspects relative of the history of painting and calligraphy: theory of art, history, main artists and their works, collecting, copying, art criticism, historical and social issues. Attention is paid foremost towards the understanding of the place and role of art in Chinese culture, the Chinese aesthetic concepts, interpretation and deciphering of works of art, the role of written sources, expert knowledge.

Learning outcomes
It is understood that after the conclusion of the course, students will have a general knowledge of the main genres in Chinese art and their history, will know how to appreciate Chinese pieces of art, and how to interpret Chinese paintings and calligraphies.
