Anthropology of tourism 3502-SSZCZ-20-OG
The lecture aims to introduce students to the problem of tourism as a phenomenon of interest to social sciences. In recent years, we have witnessed both the rise of importance of tourism measured in quantitative terms and the emergence and development of new forms of this phenomenon.
Mass organized tourism provides an important contribution to the economy of many countries, at the same time causing various consequences for societies constituting tourist destinations. Participation in mass tourism has become an increasingly common experience of Westerners, provoking questions about the nature and function of this phenomenon. The emergence and development of new forms of travel, such as alternative tourism, niche, backpacking and cultural tourism has also been a subject of interest to researchers.. Increased access to the Internet and social media raises questions about the essence of tourism experience in the era of globalization and instant communication. In the course of the lecture, we will consider whether in the era of smartphones and the widely available internet physical movement is still a distinctive type of human experience - or can the corporal journey (Urry 2007) be equated with virtual travel?
During the class the evolution of the phenomenon of travel over time and the emergence of tourism from other forms of mobility will be addressed, while we ill also analyze tourism as a phenomenon that is a product of modernity.
The subject of our special interest will be also the aspect of the relationship of the tourist with the object of his experience - a tourist attraction. The nature of the experience of the tourist himself - icluding the aspect of searching for authenticity - will be analyzed. Various forms of tourism practices will be taken into account, such as alternative and niche tourism in opposition to mass torism. The category of post-tourism and the post-tourist experience will also be discussed.
During the course, students will familiarize with various cultural texts that testify to the tourist 'cultural experience' - such as travel reports, blogs, audiovisual materials, television programs, etc.
