Quantitative data analysis: Michał Pohski’s “Social mobility in Poland” 3502-ADI-11
Research on social mobility conducted by prof. Michał Pohoski in the early 1970s due to their scale and innovation were a phenomenon in Polish sociology. The data collected then has great value and potential - unfortunately, used only to a minimal extent. Pohoski's monograph "Social Mobility in Poland" has not been published yet - it is only available in the form of a digital copy of the only copy found at the University of Warsaw Archives. Similarly, a set of data from the study (created when even a computer diskette was still the future, and not - as it is now - the past) was reproduced by merging its dispersed fragments; the same applies to the survey technical documentation.
But - once this work has been done - it is possible to return to both the data and Pohoski's book itself. Its value lies on the one hand in presenting the very issue of social mobility and changes in the social structure in the post-war People's Republic of Poland, but also in that it is an excellent example of the application of a number of statistical techniques used in the analysis of social structure - at a time when, given limited availability of computing machines - you had to think first, and then have the calculations done.
Classes are designed as a workshop-seminar, in which participants will present papers based on individual chapters of the book "Social Mobility in Poland". To some extent, this will also involve recalculating some of the results obtained by Pohoski nearly 40 years ago, in completely different technological conditions.
