Corpus Studies 3500-JIS-1-BK
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the field of corpus research and to develop their practical skill set in this area. The course covers selecting research material, searching, creating and analyzing corpora to carry out research on interpersonal communication and social discourses. The curriculum includes an introduction to corpus linguistics; overview of main research directions and methods; presentation of national corpora and available software and research tools; practical classes on corpus design; training in analyzing corpora with the use of available tools and in interpreting quantitative data for assessing social phenomena.
Participants will acquire practical skills at designing and building representative, balanced and comparable corpora for research purposes. Students will practice work with corpora with the use of concordancers (e.g. Sketch Engine), including the formulation of research questions, analysis and interpretation of quantitative data and methodological triangulation to interpret and critically assess social phenomena.

Attendance (absences allowed: 2), preparation, and active participation in discussions.

Preparation of the research project, in-class presentation, and timely submission of the research report.
