Sociology - Theory and Practice 3500-FIL-SOCTP
The course is an introduction into the rich world of sociology - a science about society. The student will get to know the basic theories and research tools of sociology, but always through the prism of actual events, phenomena and mechanisms, as well as empirical research. The course will be focused on analysis of interesting case studies.
Students will be encouraged to critically analyze and overview particular problems and to search and evaluate the sources of sociological knowledge.
Each lesson will consist of three parts: short introduction to sociological theory in the chosen area, definition of the concepts; illustration of the problem on examples; encouragement to discussion and critical evaluation of the problem.
The course will use university (London School of Economics, MIT, Harvard) and popular-science audio and video materials, easily accessed in the Internet. It will teach students how to use the electronic library of BUW. The paper handbooks will have additional role.
