The first semester of the course introduces basic tools of linguistic description, then it concentrates on the Noun Phrase.
BASIC CONCEPTS
• Units of analysis,
• Classes of words,
• Simple sentence structure
• Compound and complex sentences,
• Sentence analysis
THE NOUN PHRASE
• The structure of the noun phrase (pre- and post-modification)
• Types and properties of nouns
• Countability as a context-dependent phenomenon;
• Articles (+/- definite, +/- specific, +/- generic)
• Adjectives (comparison, word order, participles used as adjectives )
• Relative clauses (+/- defining; choice of pronoun)d doing the homework.

Learning outcomes
The student knows and uses basic grammatical terminology in English (and knows the Polish equivalents of the terms).
The student understands the notion of phrase.
The student can name different types of phrases.
The student can analyze a simple English sentence.
The student can distinguish between simple, complex and compound sentences.
The student knows the basic features of English nouns (number, gender, case).
The student is acquainted with the basic features of the noun phrase (articles, modifiers, word order, relative clauses) .
The student can use the right word order of modifiers within the noun phrase.
The student can distinguish between defining and non-defining relative clauses.
The student can use the correct relative pronoun and the correct punctuation.

Assessment criteria
Credits on the basis of:
• Active participation in classes. Possible three absences
• Homework assignments
• The mid-term test (min. 50% of points)
• The final test (min. 50% of points)
