'A word is not enough': A Course in Intercultural Communication 3301-INT-KA001-OG
Events in the early twenty first century indicate that globalization and the resulting tensions and conflicts require from us better understanding of the people of different cultural backgrounds. Lack of that knowledge and competences in communicating with people from other countries and social strata makes us perceive interhuman relations in the 'war games' fashion and not as an area of cooperation and mutual action. Therefore the course objective is to make the participants aware of the basic knowledge of the regularities and theories allowing for better understanding of the phenomena related to the communication processes between cultuires as well as within them. The course participants will learn about the roles, specificity and socio-cultural conditioning of the communication processes and the relationships occurring between the communication strategies and the dynamics and effectiveness of the socialization and acculturation processes. Particular attention will be paid to the factors interfering in the way of proper functioning of the processes and phenomena we analyze, as well as the possibilities of preventing and solving the ensuing conflicts. The role of language, nonverbal communication and their contexts will be discussed in light of the selected cultural models.
