Language acquisition and language teaching (L2, L3-Ln) 3300-DOK-IA-SEM-PiNJ
The PhD seminar concerns educational aspects of language acquisition and learning. The seminar covers eight semesters, during which students have the opportunity to review and recall the most important issues that constitute the core of the discipline (Language Acquisition and ELT Studies), with special attention paid
to one’s chosen research topic.
The topics discussed include (but are not limited to):
1) a review of the most important approaches to language acquisition studies;
2) current developments into language teaching and learning;
3) current developments in language policies and teacher training;
4) methodology of empirical research in applied linguistics;
5) basic statistical methods for the purposes of applied linguistics.
Bearing in mind that students come from various academic backgrounds and also have different academic experience, work within the seminar centres around expanding previously gained knowledge, sharing it with others, and broadening their horizons in reference to the importance of acquisition and ELT studies.
The seminar takes place once a week (90 min). At least two meetings a month are devoted to presentations and workshops, including those by peer students and invited guests. Other meetings are organised in accordance with the needs and level of individual students.
During the first two years, emphasis is placed on developing the PhD student's knowledge of the discipline, with special attention drawn to the student's research topic. We also develop students' knowledge of empirical research methodology including basic statistical methods used in applied linguistics. Individual work with the more advanced students (Year 3 and Year 4) concentrates on their writing of the PhD thesis and finalising the work around the eighth semester.

During assessment, the PhD supervisor takes into consideration:
(a) progress made by the PhD student in their knowledge and skills
(b) progress made in terms of working towards completing the PhD dissertation (descriptive and numerical assessment [0-50 pts]).
Final credit:
Regular participation in the seminar is essential. Students are assessed on the basis of their individual contributions to the seminar: research and discussions, papers delivered, and individual consultations. Assessment takes place at the end of each academic year, according to the above-mentioned criteria, and the amount of work done. By the end of the third year students are expected to have published a research paper and completed at least two chapters of their dissertation.
