Translation of literary texts 3202-S2OPL11o
The classes include both theory and practice. The objective of the classes is to develop translation abilities, raise awareness of translation problems and improve students' linguistic competence. Students will become acquainted with the determinants of given types of text. The course includes discussions of selected problems related to the translation of literary texts. Particular attention is devoted to cultural aspects of translation, as well as the problem of transfer in the translation of the so-called 'culture specific items'. The course also offers the students an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the issues related to the translation of literary texts. The classes will also focus on analysing particular translation and practical activities related to the translation of text fragments of the type mentioned, which feature discussed 'problematic' linguistic and cultural phenomena.
1. The concept of equivalence. The main theories of equivalence.
2. Relativism and linguistic universalism; translatability and untranslatability.
3. Mistranslations; typical mistakes in Russian-Polish translation.
4. Translational transformations (lexical-semantic, syntactic, concretisation, generalisation, substitution, etc.).
5. Translation techniques: transcription, transliteration, calque. Transfer of common names in translation.
6. Non-equivalent lexis. Manners of non-equivalent lexis transfer.
7. Translation of emotional lexis. Translation of idioms, proverbs, aphorisms, winged words.
8. Transfer of culture specific items. Means of rendering culture specific items in translation.
9. Word play as a translation issue. Manners of retaining comic effects in a translation. Translation of linguistic deviations from norm.
10. Slang, vulgarisms and neologisms in translation.
11. Intertextuality in translation.
12. Historical reality as an subject of translation.
13. Selected issues concerning translation of poetry.
14. New phenomena in Russian of the Soviet era. Translation of neologisms of the Soviet era.
15. Multilingualism in translation.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
– organisation of students' knowledge of the structure of Polish and Russian;
– students have basic linguistic knowledge,
– students have more profound knowledge of selected linguistic issues in comparative, contrastive and intercultural aspects;
– students are familiar with basic concepts of the theory of translation,
– students know basic translation techniques,
– student are familiar with the manners of transfer in the translation of culture specific items and linguistic humour,
– students have the knowledge of semantic, stylistic and pragmatic aspects of translation,
– students have the knowledge of phenomena typical of the Russian language in the Soviet era.
Skills:
– students are able to identify linguistic phenomena,
– students have the ability to describe basic concepts of the theory of translation,
– students know how to put into practice acquired translation techniques,
– student are able to use the acquired manners of transfer in the translation of culture specific items and linguistic humour,
– students have the ability to enumerate and describe the phenomena typical of the Russian language in the Soviet era.

– students know how to search information in different sources as regards the issues discussed.
Social competences:
− the student is aware of the need to increase knowledge through scientific publications, popular science and the media;
− the student is aware of the need for 'Lifelong learning' and develops his knowledge,
– a student has an in-depth awareness of the need to respect different cultures, views and attitudes,
− the student is able to express his or her thoughts accurately and coherently.
Assessment criteria
1. Continuous assessment: independent writing of partial works, each one of which concerns
specific, individual translation problem. Rate: 0,4. Each partial work is graded on a grading
scale of 2 to 5. At the end, the arithmetic average of grades from partial works is calculated.
2. Term paper: translation of an extract from a literary text (1-1.5 normalized page). Rate: 0,6.
Term paper is graded on a grading scale of 2 to 5.
The final grade will be calculated according to the following formula: the average grade from
partial works is multiplied by 0.4, and then the final grade multiplied by 0.6 will be added to
this product.
Criteria for converting the sum of products into the final grade:
up to 3,2 = 3
3,21–3,7 = 3,5
3,71–4,2 = 4
4,21–4,7 = 4,5
4,71 and more = 5
Note: in order to get a credit, a positive assessment of all partial and final works must be received.
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.
Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course.The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.
If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
Practical placement
