Musical Romanticism in St. Petersburg 3106-MROMPET-OG
During the lectures the artistic life of the Venice of the North in the nineteenth
century will be discussed, in particular – the musical culture of the Romantic era
and its St. Petersburg representatives, whose works is known worldwide. It is
important to discuss the activities of the New Russian Music School (the so-called
" Mighty Handful"), information on forms of musical culture characteristic of
everyday life of various social groups, and a description of major musical genres
and their evolution. An important part of the lectures is the presentation of
recordings of stage works and instrumental pieces by Milij Balakiriev, Cesar Cui, Modest
Mussorgsky, Nicholas Rimski-Korsakov and Alexander Borodin.

Learning outcomes
The result of the optional classes will be the acquisition of knowledge about the musical culture of St. Petersburg in the 19 th century and about the achievements of famous talented composers and performers from Petersburg.
Assessment criteria
-activity during the lectures (participation in discussions);
- class attendance (2 absences per semester do not entail any consequences);
- final written test (satisfactory grade in the test if the threshold of 50% of
correct answers is exceeded).
