The main problems discussed during classes (this is not a precise schedule, but just an outline):
I. The civil war in al-Andalus (1009-1031) and the end of the Cordoban Umayyads
II. The taifa period – political crisis and cultural flourishment
III. The advance of the Reconquista in the second half of the 11th century - the Christian states in the Iberian Peninsula
IV. The Almoravids and the end of the taifa states - the Arab-Berber relations
V. North African Islam and its peculiarities
VI. The Almohads in North Africa
VII. The Almohads in al-Andalus - Ibn Mardanish and the onset of the Reconquista
VIII. Las Navas de Tolosa and the gradual dismantling of the Almohad empire
IX. The beginnings of the post-Almohad world in Africa
X. The Nasrids and the twilight of al-Andalus

Learning outcomes
Students know the general outline of history of Spain, North Africa and the Mediterranean in full and late Middle Ages.
They are also able to indicate peculiar traits of western Islam in comparison with the rest of the world of classical Islam..
Lastly, they are able to indicate cultural and social processes peculiar to the region and determining its identity.
Assessment criteria
The main assessment criterion is the test covering the discussed topics and administered during the last class.
