History and culture of Jews 3007-HKZ-OG
The lecture also presents basic information on Jewish history and culture – from antiquity to the history of modern Israel. Its aims also include presentation of the available literature of the subject as well as other sources of information on the culture and history of Polish and European Jews.
The subject comprises the following topics:
Jews – religion, language, tradition
History of ancient Israel
Jews in Europe (from early mediaeval times to the early Enlightenment)
Problems of Jewish assimilation
Birth of anti-Semitism
The Holocaust - its historical and political aspects, and presentation in culture (literature, film, visual arts)
March 1968 – the end of the Jewish Diaspora in Poland
History of modern Israel
General knowledge of Jewish traditions and history

Learning outcomes
During the lecture, the student acquires the basic knowledge of the tradition, literature and religion of the Jewish Diaspora and modern Israel. The student can also find information on Jewish history and knows the latest developments in Jewish studies.
Assessment criteria
Attending the lecture. Two absences per semester are permitted.
