Polish Baroque between Europe and Sarmatia. (In search of European elements and national identity) 3001-BPL-OG
I. The Aim is obvious: to provide students with some information on history and theory of rhethoric and the basis of rhethoric practice. During the course students will learn to:
- to distinguish basic stages of rhethoric development
- to master the basis of rhethoric to be able to analyse and create any text,
- to master the basis of rhethoric argumentation techniques,
- to understand the trends of modern rhethoric research,
- to observe the specifics and uniqueness of the Polish achievements in rhethoric - in the world perspective.
II. Students will also develop skills such as:
- distinguishing rhethoric tools that are used to build argumentation based on the probability thinking in any text,
- distinguishing argumentation used by the orator in any text,
- analysing and creating and to some extent presenting texts.

1.Introduction: the beginnings of rhethoric in Greece; rhethoric outside Europe.
2. Platon and Aristotle: basic problems of theory and practice of rhethorics
3. Greek rhethors after Aristotle: Dionisios from Halikarnas, Hermogenes from Tars. The problem of Philodemus
4. Rhethoric in Rome: Rhetorica ad Hernnium; M.T. Cicero
5. Rhethoric in Rome: M.F. Quintilianus
6. Rhethoric in Bizancium : general view;
Students prepare Exercise 1:
7. Rhethoric practice part I: practice exercises for students preceeded by group analysis during the class
8. Rhethoric in the Middle Ages: artes problem; problems of arabic rhethoric; hebrew rhethoric problems;
Discussion on the first exercise - optional: presentation of the best exercises
9.Rhethoric and Humanism, part I: Greek rhethoric tradition; schooling; first attempts of synthesis
Students prepare exercise II
10. Rhethoric and Humanism, part II, reform of P. Ramus, rhethoric of 17 century [I.G. Vossius]; Polish tradition
11. Rhethoric and the Enlightment: I. Kant, H Blair and pre-Romaticism; dictionaries
Discussion on the second exercise
12. Rhethoric of 19 century: editions; new research; synthesis of theory and history of rhethoric
13. Modern Rhethoric, part I, development of rhethoric in the 20 century;
14. Rhethoric Practice, part II practical exercises for students
15. Modern Rhethoric, part II: rhethorical criticism;
Students prepare exercise III - final.
16. Modern Rhethoric, part III: an attempt of synthesis - rhethorical culture
Discussion on the third exercise - presentation of the best one
Students are evaluated on the basis of:
- participation in the class
- preparation of the exercises
- individual attempts to gain knowledge of the subject
- Final exercise and the other exercises are very important for the final grade
