Latin America in the contemporary global economy 2105-MON-ALWG-OG
The course is a compendium of knowledge about the role and position of Latin America in the modern world economy, taking into account the most important changes occurring in the global economy in recent decades and relations with other regions and partners from outside the region. The analysis will be subjected to principles of functioning of Latin American and global markets, trends in the global economy that affect the functioning of Latin America and the challenges and threats facing Latin America and the global economy. The main indicators of the economic and social development of the global economy and the countries of the Latin American region will be analyzed. The political, social and cultural context of the changes taking place will also be important. The lecturer will require students' activity while discussing particular issues (discussions, Dodaj do słownika to ask questions and express their opinions).
Issues discussed:
1. Modern world economy. Definitions, characteristics, regularities, conditions. Trends and challenges.
2. Globalization, internationalization, transnationalization, integration, disintegration. Is there a global economy?
3. The political, social and cultural context of the changes taking place in the contemporary global economy and the Latin American region.
4. The information and technological revolution as a modern stage of the development of the world economy.
5. New centers of growth of the world economy. New and old hegemoni. The system of economic forces and political strategies.
6. Economic and social change in the Latin American region. Myth or reality?
7. Latin America's economic development on a global background.
8. Brazil. A new global economy giant or a colossus on clay legs?
9. Countries of Cono Sur.
10. Mexico in North America, Latin America and in the global dimension.
11. Andean Countries.
12. Central America.
13. The Caribbean. Role in Latin America and the global economy.
14. Integration and disintegration processes in Latin America and processes in the global dimension.
15. Prospects and threats.

Knowledge:
- knows the definitions and characteristics of the contemporary global economy;
- knows the changes taking place in the modern world economy, with particular emphasis on the Latin American region;
- knows the basic macroeconomic indicators allowing to characterize the Latin American countries;
- knows the conditions and directions of development of Latin American economies;
Skills:
- can characterize and discuss the changes taking place in the modern global economy, especially in the Latin America region;
- can analyze the role and position of the most important Latin American economies against the global background;
- can prepare a presentation on a selected Latin American economy
Assessment criteria
- presence is obligatory (two unexcused absences are allowed)
- presentation and outline on the selected Latin American economy (50% points)
- written final test (50% of points)
