Analysing Media Discourse 2101-1ZU3ANDM
Subject matter includes the following selected issues:
1.What is the media discourse. Semiotic aspects of discourse: the major systems, sign, sign, symbol. The code language and meta-language. Cultural codes, meaning creation. Three semiotic schools: Anglo-Saxon semiotics (Peirce), Russian (Tartus school) and French (Barthes).
2. Time and space in the political discourse.
3 audio-visual language as a universal language.
4. Changing discourse - change meaning. The dominance of the discourse. Giving meaning and discourse implementation. Mediated body as text. Linguistic gender identity.
5. Media political discourse as a narrative battle: Threats and promises. Populist discourse. Polish public languages. Tabloid narratives
6. Social world and media events. Media rhetoric as a discursive practice of broadcasting meanings. Advertising as a practice of characters creation.

KNOWLEDGE
The lecture is supposed to create the meta-perspective for the media statements stream analysis, to evaluate conditions for the emergence of a variety of expressions, the rules to generate ideological messages.
SKILLS
Student:
• recognizes the different discourses, as such, and understands what determines their conditions
• can extract meaning contained in ideological discourse
• can analyze the discourse - both visual and verbal
• knows how to formulate the interest of those who design discourse and knows how discourse is defined as a way of describing the world
