Practical classes in facies analysis with selected elements of analysis of sedimentary basins 1300-WM-PAF
Practical classes (placement) combining elements of a seminar and of classes.
Every placement begins with a Power-Point presentation prepared by students (individually or in teams) devoted to various types of depositional systems and to other issues, on which this particular placement concentrates. The part devoted to facies analysis embraces reconstruction of sedimentary processes taking place in the basins by drawing lithofacies - bathymetrical interpretations. The students prepare graphic works, basing on given materials. Particular classes are devoted to various types of sedimentary environments, such as shelf, ramp, delta etc. Selected elements of basin analysis include principles of sequence stratigraphy, and reconstruction of diagenesis of sedimentary rocks based on geochemical and CAI analyses. The placement embraces also computer modelling of depositional processes in sedimentary basins, based on variations of such parameters as: subsidence, clastic material delivery, sea level fluctuations or carbonate production. Modelled are both clastic and carbonate depositional systems.

The student is familiar with basic terrestrial and marine depositional systems on Earth,
The student reconstructs the sedimentary history of a depositional basin,
The student is able to evaluate the influence of particular internal (tectonics, subsidence) and external (eustatic sea level changes) factors on the deposition in a sedimentary basin and understands the relations between them,
The student draws lithofacies-bathymetrical crosscuts based on lithologic profiles,
The student understands the principles of sequence stratigraphy,
The student reconstructs diagenetic and burial history of the sediments basing on geochemical, isotopic and CAI analyses,
The student works on computer models, reconstructing sedimentation processes in the basin by analysing variations of such parameters as: subsidence, clastic material delivery, sea level fluctuations and carbonate production,
The student prepares seminar presentations by his own,
The student takes part in discussions.
Assessment criteria
Obtaining a course credit requires preparation of all graphic exercises and an oral presentation. The course is credited based on the assessment of the presentation and of graphic works. Two absences allowed.
