Essentials of petroleum geochemistry 1300-WEPG-OG
Course comprises:
1. Determining oil migration distances from source rocks to reservoirs
2. Estimation of hydrocarbons migration based on biomarkers
3. Compound-specific stable isotopes (carbon, hydrogen, sulphur)
4. Interpreting crude oil data:
a) Oil-to-oil correlations
b) Oil-to-source rock correlations
5. Aliphatic hydrocarbons (n-alkanes, isoprenoids, steranes, hopanes)
6. Aromatic hydrocarbons (aromatic steranes, aromatic carotenoids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs])
7. Polar compounds (bacteriohopanoids [BHPs], GDGTs)
8. Geoporphyrins and maleimides
9. Asphaltenes
10. Gas-to-gas and gas-to-source rock correlations (examples of case studies)
Type of course
Learning outcomes
The student will learn about the methodology and interpretation of geochemical data, biomarkers in particular. The student will learn techniques for the geochemical correlation of oil-oil, oil-source rock, gas-gas and gas-source rock. The student will familiarize the methods and programmes (e.g. Xcalibur) used to interpret aliphatic, aromatic and polar compounds.
Assessment criteria
The examination requirements cover the scope of material presented at the lectures. The exam is in writing and includes a test and descriptive part.
Practical placement
none
