Sedimentary basins 1300-WBSED-GES
The lecture presents basic information on the sedimentary basins supplemented by modern and fossil examples.
In the first part presented are basic terms and definitions concerning the analysis of sedimentary basins. Introduced are various classifications of basins, based on various criteria, such as: geotectonic position, character of boundaries, and preservation of the infilling deposits. This is followed by a detailed presentation of the Wilson geotectonic cycle.
In the second part, basic types of sedimentary basins, classified on the base of their geotectonic position and place in the Wilson cycle, are introduced in a systematic way. Modern and fossil examples are presented for each category together with the description of the sedimentary succession that infills them. The first big category of the presented basins are the continental extensional basins, including: rifts, aulacogens, sag basins and basins of passive continental margins. This is followed by the presentation of other types of extensional sedimentary basins – oceanic sag basins and pull-apart basins. Second big category of the presented sedimentary basins are the compressional basins embracing subduction and collision basins. Subduction basins include oceanic trenches, fore-arc, intra-arc, marginal and back-arc basins. Collision basins include remnant, fore-deep and Pannonian basins.
