General geographical, hydrographical and geological characteristic of the Antarctic. History of the Antarctic exploration. Current political and economic status of the Antarctic. The significance of scientific investigation in the Antarctic for global understanding of problems in the following scientific fields:
Geology and Geophysics,
Glaciology,
Biology,
Oceanology,
Meteorology.
Polish activity in the Earth Science, Polish Activity in the Biological Sciences, Running of the Arctowski Station. Protection of Antarctic environment.

Learning outcomes
After lectures dealing with the Antarctic student should have the basic knowledge of political and economic problems as well as scientific challenges of southern polar region. Student should feel Polish reasons of State in this area, and will be able to distinguish without any doubts: Antarctic Continent, the Antarctic and Arctic.
