Seminars for M. Sc. students - IV level (engineering geology) (part 1) 1300-OSMI4Z
Seminar aims to acquaint students with the task of the problems commonly found during implementation of the MSc thesis in engineering geology specialization. In the winter semester, students has already chosen the theme of their thesis and they are after a brief reconnaissance of the thesis area. The first presentation shows their observations and comments on the conformity of existing materials with reality. The main tasks of the work - on which the student attention will focus – are agreed. The presentation covers the essential information on the geology and hydrogeology of the studied area. In the summer semester student evaluate the engineering-geological conditions of studied area and select the methods to solve the problem posed in the thesis. This applies to, in particular, the scope of field research and the way of mapping and soil sampling methods.
The following stages of the thesis implementation are discussed:
- methodological basis of research work,
- methodological basics of implementation of the thesis,
- results of preliminary field studies,
- preliminary table of contents – plan of MSc thesis,
- archival research - a review of the literature of the study area,
- field research – designing the methods of field research, the amount and type of samples needed to perform the planned laboratory tests,
- laboratory tests – determination the scope and their methodology.
Type of course
Prerequisites (description)
Learning outcomes
After completing the course a student:
- knows methodological basics of implementation of the thesis,
- has the ability to prepare a preliminary table of contents - the work plan, which includes the main part of the thesis,
- is able to select and to examine archival materials,
- has a general knowledge of the methods of engineering-geological field and laboratory research,
- knows the basic methods of field and laboratory research and specialized testing methods,
- can specify a range of field and laboratory tests needed to complete the tasks of the thesis,
- has the knowledge and skills for engineering-geological and hydrogelogical mapping,
- is able to use the methods of engineering-geological field research,
- is able to interpret the results of engineering-geological research,
- assesses the criteria for the complexity of engineering-geological conditions,
- is able to produce the maps of engineering-geological regionalization.
Assessment criteria
Evaluation based on the presentation (1-2 per semester) and materials prepared to presentation.
Requirements that are considered to evaluation:
- professional level of presentation and prepared materials,
- visual form of presentation and its attractiveness,
- communication skills,
- participate in the discussion.
