Practicum of Micropalaeontology 1300-ORMP4L1
Extraction of microfosills from clays, brown coal, marls and limestones. Calcareous (foraminiferans), phosphate (conodonts, vertebrate microremains) and organic (spores, pollens, dinocysts) microfossils are extracted from samples of rocks by different mechanical and chemical techniques : separation with use of sieve, dissolving in acids, mechanical dezintegration by calcium sulfate and with use of crushing machine Cuttinng and dyeing of selected specimens. Preparation of specimens to observation under optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Documentation of microfossils (drawnings and SEM photographs.
Type of course
Prerequisites (description)
Learning outcomes
Students can extract different types of microfossils (calcareous, phosphate and organic microfossils) from different types of sediments and rocks (clays, brown coal, limestones and marls) wit a use of appropriate mechanical and chemical techniques (sieving, dissolving in acids, mechanical desintegration of rocks with a use of chemicals and crushing machine). Students can prepare specimens for both optical and SEM observations. They also get basic knowledge on industrial safety
Assessment criteria
Presence frequency, acivity, final written test finished by test mark.
