Biomathematics in practise 1000-1S18BP
Interdisciplinary is nowadays one of the most important aspect of most scientific ventures, with interplay of mathematical modelling with biology or medicine being one of the most prominent examples. One can use, for example, a mathematical model based on the ordinary differential equations to describe the tumor growth and try to answer the question if there is a synergy effect between two considered drugs. Another class of models can describe the properties of the blood flow in the cardiovascular system and help to assess the mortality risk under different pathological conditions (e.g. increased arterial stiffness).
During the course, by working on the joint projects (3-4 people in each group), each student will learn how to create mathematical models, how to analyze and interpret biological or biomedical data, and how to perform computer simulations. Projects will be prepared based on the real world biological and medical problems, which were or actively are researched by the instructors themselves or by their collaborators. We assume that each group will receive real data that will require a) in-depth analysis, b) choosing proper mathematical tools to prepare the model, and c) performing model analysis and assess validity of its predictions. The students will learn how to formulate proper hypotheses, i.e. if they are of any significance for biology or medicine and, at the same time, if they can be tackled using existing or new mathematical tools. The work will be planned in the way that each group will have a chance to prepare materials which could be later used for a joint publication.
