Knowledge transfer (scholar’s workshop) 0000-SZD-TRW-EN
The goal of the course is to familiarize students with the subject of knowledge transfer from science to society. Basic concepts and terminology in knowledge transfer and commercialization will be introduced, as well as legal acts regulating this sphere, conditions for the protection and commercialization of knowledge and the principles of knowledge transfer, in particular rules for technology transfer at the University of Warsaw. All issues will be illustrated with practical examples (cases) from the University of Warsaw. During the course, the doctoral student will find answers to the questions why and how to protect the results of its research, how to make money out of the knowledge, what are rights and obligations for authors at the University of Warsaw, who and how can help them in the protection and commercialization of knowledge at the University of Warsaw.
The material will be presented in four one-hour thematic blocks:
1. Knowledge transfer introduction: intellectual property - basic concepts and legal acts
Main topics:
- intellectual property,
- copyright and related rights (works, databases),
- industrial property law (inventions, patents, industrial designs, trademarks)
2. Knowledge transfer in action: commercialization - commercialization paths
Main topics:
- forms of commercialization (determinants for choosing commercialization path)
- direct commercialization (license agreements)
- indirect commercialization (start-up, spin-off, spin-out companies)
3. Knowledge transfer in examples: case study of knowledge transfer from the University of Warsaw
Main topics:
- examples of commercialization of knowledge from various fields of research at the University of Warsaw (success factors, causes of failure, specificity of commercialization in various research fields)
4. Knowledge transfer at the University of Warsaw - the ecosystem of knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship support at the University of Warsaw
Main topics:
- basic information about the Regulations on intellectual property management at the University of Warsaw (rights and obligations of authors (including students) at the University of Warsaw)
- organizational units supporting the entrepreneurship of students and researchers at the University of Warsaw and responsible for the protection and commercialization of knowledge (University Technology Transfer Center, UW Incubator, UWRC Ltd. - UW special purpose vehicle)
