The detailed scope of course includes the following topics:
1. Latin American societies: identities and structures
2. Historical and ethnic identity and contemporary multiculturalism
3. Social stratification, classes, social mobility
4. Poverty and social exclusion. Culture of poverty
5. Class, race and ethnic based social conflicts
6. Social structure and agency
7. Civil society, social capital, social trust
8. Latin Ameircan political culture(s). Questions of caudillismo, populismo, paternalismo, personalismo.
9. Clientelism and corruption as elements of social and political life
10. Socio-political contexts and results of the democratisation processes.
11.Social subjectivity. New social movements.
12. New development dillemas and socio-environmental conflicts.
13. Violence as element of culture and social reality.
14. Machismo.
15. Problem of drug industry and crime.

- have an in-depth knowledge about the relationship between Cultural Studies, American Studies and: Cultural Anthropology, Social Sciences and Regional Studies, as well as History, that enables an interdisciplinary research and approach
- have knowledge of the concepts and the advanced methods of the social sciences used to build and analyze models explaining specifics of
complex social phenomena in Latin America and the Caribbean
- have an in-depth knowledge
- have an in-depth knowledge about the diversity and specifics of social relations, characteristic to an American society
- have an in-depth knowledge on a variety of views on the structure of political and social ties in Latin America and the Caribbean
- is able to search for, analyze, evaluate, select and use information from a variety of sources to formulate critical judgments about the socio-cultural phenomena in Latin America and the Caribbean
- critically analyze and interpret proposals for solving the real social, political and economic problems of an American society, and evaluate their effectiveness
Assessment criteria
The initial condition for students to be allowed for final exam is the regular attendance of ectures.
