Practical German 4103-PNJN35w

Objectives:
Further development of students` linguistic competence focusing on particular language skills Relevant knowledge of German is a necessary prerequisite.
Requirements:
1.) Attendance: not less than 90%;
2.) Active participation
3.) A speech: all students are required to make at least one unrehearsed speech a semester
4.) Presentation: based on a press article prepared and selected by the student. The length of the presentation may depend on the capacity of the article and topic selected by the student but needs to be consulted with the instructor
5.) Home assignments: the students are given two written home assignments (the possible topics will be proposed during classes)
6.) In-class written tests: two a semester - one before the Practice of Teaching, one towards the end of semester;
7.) Portfolio - as a documentation of progress and additional material
The final grade will be the sum of components. If the final grade falls below the required minimum the student will be given additional in-class written test.
During the course we will discuss texts, interviews as well as television programmes on the following topics:
- The Germans, the stereotype of the Germans, the stereotype of the Poles, students in Germany, education in Germany, teenage culture - youth language, current news
- the media, the questions of the influence of the media and their responsibility, the differences between German and Polish media.
- political culture
texts: German press, specialized literature
Skills and competences (as objectives to be achieved during the course):
listening: the students understand spoken language, also authentic, "fast" utterances both direct and broadcast
sources: authentic media recordings in German (also selected and prepared by the students as a basis for discussion)
speaking: students freely participate in different kinds of communication and discussions, they are familiar with idiomatic phrases and colloquial language. They speak fluently and are able to express semantic subtleties; to adopt a given role. They are able to reformulate and paraphrase ideas. Their utterances are logical and adequate to situation.
phonetics: students have to master standard German pronunciation (intonation, rhythm, pauses, long and short vowels)
reading: student are able to read and comprehend all kinds of written texts, also abstract and linguistically complex
writing: students are able produce clear and cohesive texts stylistically adequate to the text's aim and function. Students are able to summarise, to discuss, and if necessary, respond to specialized and literary texts
Orthography: students are familiar with and use the rules of modern
grammar: grammatical mistakes are "allowed", if they are: 1. identified by the student 2. corrected by the student 3. not repeated
vocabulary: students systematically expand their vocabulary, as well as apply the newly acquired vocabulary
